Our agency was approached by a man. He was married, but had warm feelings for another woman — one he himself had once placed in a senior position at a prestigious company in a resort town. For several years they had been in a close relationship, and he was already considering divorcing his wife and marrying his beloved.
Troubling Changes
Over the last few months he had begun to notice that she had grown colder toward him. More and more often she had things to do. They lived in different cities, far apart, and he could not work out for himself what was going on.
Cooling rarely happens all at once. Fewer calls, shorter conversations, “busy” more and more often, plans falling through at the last minute. Separately these are trifles; together they are a reason to stop and think. And at a distance, doubts grow faster: you cannot check them with your own eyes.
On the advice of acquaintances, he came to us: let the detectives dispel his doubts — or confirm them.
Surveillance
Our detectives flew to the city where the woman lived and put her under surveillance. For several days there was nothing unusual in her routine: work in the morning, home in the evening, the night at home, and back to work the next morning.
Surveillance is patient work. Days can pass without a single event, and it is important not to stop too early: the most important things often happen when a person is sure that no one is watching — at the end of the week, say, right after work.
That is how it went here too. On Saturday, at the end of the working day, she left her car in the parking lot, crossed the street and headed — as it turned out — to a restaurant. An admirer was waiting for her there. They had dinner together and spent the night in a hotel.
Distance leaves room for guesswork. Surveillance leaves only facts.
An Unexpected Outcome
For our client this came as a great shock. He simply could not understand how this could have happened to him, of all people. But at least he learned the truth before he had divorced for the sake of this relationship.
We do not judge either our clients or the people we observe: our job is to establish the facts, and what to do with them is decided by the person who came to us.
A long-distance relationship rests on trust: you cannot see how a person lives in another city. When that trust cracks, doubts wear you down more than any truth. An outside view helps resolve them — one way or the other. Our detectives travel to wherever their work is needed, in any city.
